Community Resources
The Strathcona Community Centre is located in one of Vancouver's oldest neighbourhoods. They have been serving the community with recreational services for over 35 years.
They provide a variety of services: licensed childcare, preschool, children, youth, adult, fitness centre and seniors programs. They are also one of the few community centres that have a Breakfast and Food Security program for children.
The Strathcona Community Centre is jointly operated by the Vancouver Park Board and the Strathcona Community Centre Association.
The Carnegie Centre began its history in 1903 as Vancouver’s first public library, built in the heart of downtown Vancouver with funds donated by U.S. steel magnate and philanthropist Andrew Carnegie. The Centre is known for its rich multicultural programming and arts activities.
The Carnegie Centre is a testament to the strength and commitment of Downtown Eastside residents to renew and build a healthy community for people of every income level, lifestyle and background. Over 400 volunteers contribute their time, talents and enthusiasm to the Carnegie Centre each year.
For its 100th anniversary, the Carnegie Centre is joining with community partners to celebrate the people and places of the Downtown Eastside in 2003 with arts, performances, education, and family-oriented events for people of all ages, from all parts of Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.
