The City of Vancouver Council has approved the construction of the Powell Street Overpass Project, a $50-million road and rail enhancement project for a section of Powell Street, west of Clark Drive. The Project is designed to improve safety and navigation through the area for all commuters while enhancing the rail network that supports cargo movement to and from the Port.
The City and all project partners have finalized detailed funding agreements and the Design Build Contractor has been selected. The City’s project information report is available for viewing on the City’s website at vancouver.ca.
Major construction is now expected to begin during the week of June 10, 2013 for completion in the Summer of 2014. BA Blacktop has been selected to serve as the Design Build Contractor, responsible for constructing the overpass while mitigating off-site impacts. A detailed construction schedule and local traffic management plan for the construction phase will be communicated as soon as detailed information is available. Please note that:
- Local businesses and community organizations will remain open and accessible throughout the construction period;
- Powell Street will be fully closed to traffic between Hawks Avenue and Clark Drive, allowing business and local traffic access only;
- Commuters not destined for local businesses will be encouraged to use alternative arterial routes; and
- TransLink services will be re-routed to a parallel section of Hastings Street starting June 10, 2013.
