BREAKING: City Releases Viaduct Report in advance of Council Vote; New Library Open House, Upcoming Events

Hello, Strathcona friends and neighbours.

1. City Report on Viaduct Removal

Today, the City of Vancouver released an 80 page report on the Viaducts and Eastern Core Strategy.
http://former.vancouver.ca/ctyclerk/cclerk/20130625/documents/rr1.pdf

Having skimmed throught the report:

A.) It does promise consultation and discussion as part of the two year and $3 million Phase II, which is contingent on an upcoming vote to remove in principal. This does more or less reflect the first half of the intent of our recent May SRA resolution: "Be it resolved that the we support the removal of the viaducts in principle only, on the express condition that the removal in principle is a necessary precursor to the development of an Eastern Core Strategy. We do not support the physical removal of the viaducts without said strategy"

B.) The report does NOT promise Prior Street calming specifically - but hints at that direction, and alternate routes on the flats, and explicitly ties Eastern Core Strategy to the viaducts removal process.

Essentially it's a good first step, but there is a lot of work to be done: involving the City, the SRA and the various stakeholders and residents, from False Creek to Grandview Woodland to the DTES.

Despite the passage on page 4 of the report, ("As a result of public input through our consultations, the Mayor directed staff to provide information on five key items: calming measures for Prior Street, prioritizing work on the Malkin Avenue connection... ") Strathcona Residents should feel good about how the pressure we excerted as a united community during last summer's ReclaimPrior rally

Our continued hard-fought lobby work over the last year, and rallying in spring and have got us to a point where we are about to embark what will hopefully be a meaningful consultation process, with the communites as real partners in the process.
