Feds announce plan to double track through Strathcona

On the news front, at our May meeting, representatives from city engineering said they knew of no plans to double the existing single track. Last week, the Ministry of Transportation released this:

On June 22, Minister of Transport Marc Garneau announced that the federal government is investing $22.5 million dollars in a project led by Canadian National, with investment from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority, that involves “designing and building a 4.2 kilometre-long secondary track, parallel to the existing Burrard Inlet line, in the City of Vancouver. The increased rail capacity will support the flow of goods through the south shore port area, as trade volumes continue to grow."

The SRA’s Train Working Group has been pushing hard with the city and the CTA to acknowledge the impact increased train traffic is already having on our neighbourhood. Doubling the track will only make a bad situation worse. We need to keep up the pressure have these impacts acknowledged and addressed. The Working Group could use help analyzing and organizing data to help build our case. If you have some time/expertise to contribute, please e-mail them at
