Strathcona, Vancouver's First Neighbourhood

Strathcona, Vancouver’s oldest and truly unique neighbourhood, has been called a slum, “home of the working man,” and absolutely charming. Starting out as a collection of shacks and cottages around the Hastings Mill, it developed into a residential area that quickly moved south and east away from the mill... Dear Neighbours,

For our upcoming SRA Meeting on March 1 at 7pm in the Strathcona Community Centre, we have invited several stakeholders to participate in a panel discussion on "The Future of Chinatown". With many new property development projects underway in Chinatown, our community has raised concern during the December SRA Meeting about implications for Chinatown's residents, businesses and culture. Given that the future of Chinatown is very closely linked to that...

The Vancouver Park Board are currently considering a renewal for Strathcona Park (between Prior St, Malkin St, Raymur Ave, and Hawks Ave).

As a way to provide input to the Park Board at the early stages of planning - rather than reacting to near complete plans - we would like to seek input from Strathcona residents on what the community would like to see in a re-designed Strathcona Park.

All responses will be anonymized, presented at an upcoming SRA meeting, and shared with...

Dear Neighbours,

During our SRA meeting in November 2016, we had a chance to meet with the City of Vancouver's Public Engagement team to express our thoughts, concerns and needs for Union Street as a gateway for residents, pedestrians, cyclists, local services and motorists. We have distilled our opinions and communicated those to the City during the last months.

In December 2016, the Vancouver City Council allocated a 0.5% emergency property tax increase to combat the fentanyl crisis, which included overdose response, a new fire truck and crew, mobile medical unit, training, supplies, and a commitment to a long overdue community policing centre for Strathcona.

A formal motion to support this commitment was announced last week, and will be voted on (tomorrow) morning, Wednesday January 25.

Hello neighbours,

Since our last meeting, SRA council member Charis Walko has requested and received a snow-and-ice-response salt drop for our neighbourhood.

While we are through the worst of the snow and ice for now - temperatures are expected to drop below freezing tonight and through the week.

The City has dropped a small pile of salted sand at the cul-de-sac at 700 Georgia (at Hawks), for the free use of Strathcona neighbours.

Please note that this is a VERY...

Please note:

"CN is increasing freight train service via the two-mile-long Burrard Inlet (BI) spur line in urban Vancouver, that crosses Glen Drive, Venables, Union and Cordova beginning on January 2, 2017 to improve service to customers.

The crossings are protected by lights and bells, and CN reminds motorists that all signals should be obeyed, for their own safety.

A reminder to the public that freight trains operate seven days per week, 24 hours per day. CN expects to...

Dear Neighbours,

The Strathcona Resident Association is wishing you and your families a Happy New Year!   We finished off 2016 with identifying the top priorities for our neighbourhood. Details of our discussion can be found in the December SRA meeting minutes below. One of the top priorities we identified were the implications of the viaduct removal for our community.    In this spirit, we are starting the new year right away with the City of Vancouver's...
