CONSTRUCTION UPDATE
The SRA met with PCL, the lead contractor for the new St. Paul’s Hospital, on Jan. 11, 2022 for an update on construction activity in the next six months.
Excavation, which has been ongoing since November, is expected to continue through May. Through at least March, it will continue 24 hours a day during the week in order to reduce traffic congestion, carbon emissions and the overall duration of the work. Trucks enter through the National Ave. gate in a circuit to eliminate backup alarms. PCL is making every effort to keep these trucks off Prior St. So far, so good.
In March, they will tie into the existing storm drain, which will involve running lines under Prior St. As with recent BC Hydro work, one lane of traffic will remain open in each direction throughout.
Structural work will begin in late February, with the installation of the first of four tower cranes. Concrete will start arriving soon after, using the National gate and the same circuit strategy to minimize noise. Main St. and Terminal will remain the preferred access routes. There are currently around 130 workers on site. That number will rise to 500+ by fall. PCL has arranged for parking and shuttles to encourage the use of public transportation.
If you have a complaint, concern or question, you can contact PCL directly using their Project Hotline at (604)335-2669. Leave a message, and they will respond within 24 hours.
