Agenda for the Strathcona Air Quality Forum

1. Welcome (1pm)

2. Trefor Smith - Environment Lead for the Strathcona Residents Association (1:05pm - 1:30pm)

  1. speak to the expansion of port container shipping operations through the neighbourhood that includes the twinning of the Burrard Inlet CN Railway Line, doubling of diesel trucks associated with the Port, and the City/Port proposing for the Burrard Inlet Line Overpass Project to convert Prior Street into the new main road arterial for freight trucks to access Produce Row warehouses and for all other traffic in and out of downtown. All of this new projects will increase air emissions from trains, trucks and cars, heavy machinery and large vessels at berth at the port. Update on findings of the Centerm project review process and provincial condition for a Air Emissions Management Plan that involves Metro Vancouver, Vancouver Coastal Health and the provincial Environmental Assessment Office.

2. Video on Air Quality and Health in Canadian Cities (Segments from “Something in the Air”) (1:30pm-2:00pm)

3. Dr. Naomi Zimmerman - UBC Air Quality Scientist - Director of the iREACH Lab (Integrated Research in Energy, Air, Climate & Health) at UBC (1:40 pm-2:10pm)

To speak on air quality monitoring research and her work at UBC. Prof. Zimmerman will share her experience and advice for working with lower cost air quality monitors, as well as areas of interest where she will be conducting research in the region.

(15 minute presentation and 15 minutes Q&A)

4. City of Vancouver Councillor Jean Swanson, (2:15pm - 2:40pm)

To speak on air quality impacts of arterial roadways and her motion, and recent motion (that was adopted as a resolution by council) the City to take greater consideration of potential effects of air pollution from road arterials on the health of city residents when making planning decisions.

5. Brian Beveridge - Co-Director, West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project (via Skype) - 3:00pm-3:30pm

To speak on similarities between West Oakland and Strathcona as communities challenged by air quality issues from port activities and major national trade transportation arterials, and what Strathcona can learn from West Oakland’s experience of community-based AQ monitoring programs, community research partnerships with government and universities, and community air quality planning - and how all these can help a community begin to regain some control over the air emissions its residents are exposed to.

6. Closing - Trefor Smith, SRA - What’s next? How to get involved in the Strathcona AQ monitoring project! (3:30pm - 3:45pm)

• The event will be a friendly and inviting community event with a combination of speakers and videos for raising awareness about AQ issues

• Maximum of 50 attendees

• A digital projector, wifi and refreshments will be available for use by presenters
