Everything You Always Wanted to Know About DTES* (*But Were Afraid to Ask)

Monday, February 2, 2015

Hi neighbours!
This is a reminder about our exciting upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Feb 4th (7:15 at the Strathcona Community Centre) with City of Vancouver senior planner, Tom Wanklin.
The opportunity to have a conversation with Tom, head planner for our area (DTES)  is very timely as the 2nd edition of ‘the community update for the Downtown Eastside (DTES) Plan’ just came out a few days ago:
So many details to take in and interpret - maps, stats, new building heights, ongoing projects…
Some of these new changes are already being implemented in our neighbourhood!
What does this all mean?
Come out to hear how Strathcona will be affected and ask Tom Wanlkin your specific questions directly.
Here are a few of the questions we, the SRA Executive Council, are hoping to ask Tom on Wednesday night:
-- Could you briefly summarize the main components of the DTES Local Area Plan that directly affect Strathcona? Hastings Street? Prior Street?

-- Have any developers expressed interest in taking advantage of the new height maximums along Hastings Street or in building the mandated social housing in the DEOD?

-- What is happening with the viaduct removal consultation and planning process right now? Is it off the table or what?

-- Does the City have any concerns about the province's sale of Stamps Place and other public housing developments to non-profits? Is the City taking a position on this issue? Does it have any influence on the province's actions?

Take a fresh look at our Local Area Plan and bring your own questions for Tom.

Other items on the agenda for Wednesday night include brief reports on:

— Coalition of Vancouver Neighbourhoods report
-- Supreme Court of BC decision regarding flawed public consultation process in Yaletown development
— the ground-breaking ceremony for the new local VPL branch
-- Stamps Place update
— Rice Block container housing open house cancelled

Looking forward to seeing everyone,
SRA Executive Council: Elana, Rick, Gord, Chris and Roberta
