Strathcona, Vancouver's First Neighbourhood

Strathcona, Vancouver’s oldest and truly unique neighbourhood, has been called a slum, “home of the working man,” and absolutely charming. Starting out as a collection of shacks and cottages around the Hastings Mill, it developed into a residential area that quickly moved south and east away from the mill... At the community meeting with the VPD on March 31st, many residents complained about long wait times, unprofessional responses and poor service from the responders at the other end of 911 and the non-emergency line. We learned that this service is provided by a private company called Ecomm, not by the VPD.

Hello neighbours,

March was a turbulent month. It began with the heated debate about an Atira development proposal at 420 Hawks which on many levels is out of line with the DTES Local Area Plan. The SRA has allied with the Strathcona BIA, Raycam, Stamps Tenants Council and the Ukrainian Cultural Centre to bring our concerns about this development to the Planning Department.

See notes below.

Later in the month we heard that City Council voted to adjust the definition...

Hello neighbours,
About 300 community residents marched through the rain Friday night in solidarity with our local Strathcona neighbour who was brutally attacked in her home on Hawks Avenue on Thursday. The solidarity walk was organized by local Strathcona women. A fundraising campaign, started by another neighbour, has already raised over $38,000 to go towards the survivor’s healing and recovery. These are intense times in Strathcona. The strength and engagement of our...

Tonight at 7pm, Strathconans and friends will be meeting outside the Community Centre to walk and show love, solidarity, and support for the survivor of yesterday's brutal assault in our neighbourhood.
There has been a lot of online speculation and gossiping about alleged details of this awful incident — the VPD have advised this isn't helpful to the survivor or the ongoing investigation by police. Tonight is about the community showing solidarity and support for the survivor,...

Lots to tell you, but first of all mark your calendars with the date for our next meeting, Wednesday, March 4th 7:15 at the Strathcona Community Centre. We have guests speakers from Car 87!
1. Guest Speakers: When you mention Car 87 in Vancouver, some people might think you’re talking about the local punk rock group by that name.
But Car 87 is the number of a police unit that is dispatched to respond to calls where mental illness is thought...

Hi neighbours!
This is a reminder about our exciting upcoming meeting on Wednesday, Feb 4th (7:15 at the Strathcona Community Centre) with City of Vancouver senior planner, Tom Wanklin.
The opportunity to have a conversation with Tom, head planner for our area (DTES)  is very timely as the 2nd edition of ‘the community update for the Downtown Eastside (DTES) Plan’ just came out a few days ago:

Hello everyone,

We are excited to announce that Tom Wanklin, Senior Planner with the City of Vancouver, in charge of our area (DTES) as well as the study currently going on for the Eastern Core and Northeast False Creek (involving the viaducts) will be our guest at the next SRA meeting on Feb 4th. It’s been a while since we’ve had a good sit down with City Staff, and this is an amazing opportunity for a Q & A with a planner who is directly linked with our neighbourhood.
